Description

Since Helicopters can transport Land units, and Carriers can transport Helicopters and his cargo at same time. I think Carriers should be able to transport Land units by themselves, even when not inside Helicopters.

Transport ships are still needed to carry Small Land (not military) and Big Land (wheeled) units.

Fixed the helptext of Helicopters that says "infantry units" because they can actually carry any unit of Land class, included infantry and cavalry.

Patch for trunk (civ2civ3 and sandbox). Tested on S2_6.

This might not achieve as much as you'd like, due to embarks/disembark restrictions.

A unit like Riflemen (that doesn't specialise in mobility) can load onto a Carrier on its own, or arrive on a Carrier on a Helicopter; but in the latter case, the Helicopter cannot leave without the Riflemen. So you can't freely rearrange units as you might have hoped.

I don't see a way around this while keeping the embarks/disembarks restrictions, with the engine as it is currently, since the embarkation restrictions are tied to cities/extras.

Rebased version which is a commit candidate, although I'll wait for comment on the above issue before committing.

Good point, I didn't notice it, although I just found a workaround in game (no need to change anything). If you place the helicopter+infantry in a tile adjacent to the carrier, you can select the infantry and move it to the carrier alone. I like how it works.

Anyway, the main purpose of the patch was to allow Carriers to transport infantry units without the need of helicopters. I found odd that Carriers can transport infantry units when they are inside helicopters, but can not carry the same infantry units alone.

I see now that this is only possible for infantry units that have embark/disembark capabilities (what you called mobility).

Anyway, I see ok that rest of units (not set to embark/disembark helicopters) can not be rearranged inside the carrier. It even makes sense to me that ancient units can not be unloaded from helicopters to carriers on the fly, unless you upgrade them to marines.
