Experienced users will still be able to unlatch the drive thus speeding up the retry process for hopeless disks. Casual users should be the ones who benefit the most from the auto give up mechanism. In fact, unlatching the drive while the disk is being read (in order to avoid a deadlock) is not perceived as an obvious task.
Documenting the unlatching would have little benefit as users tend not to read documentation.
